Famed for its colorful, much photographed International Balloon Fiesta, Albuquerque byways lead to some of the most stunning scenery anywhere and a fiesta of excellent restaurants to boot -- well over 1,500 eateries, in fact. Major downtown revitalization has brought in chocolatiers, sushi bars, and Internet cafes, along with outposts for Cajun, French, Italian, Thai, Vietnamese and more. Albuquerque culinary choices may span the world, yet Southwestern cuisine remains the bedrock. For any meal, “red, green or Christmas” queries determine whether patrons want orders doused with red or green chile, or a Christmas combo. For lunch, insiders often head to Doran’s Central Pharmacy, known for having some of the best tortillas around. On the fine dining front, the High Noon Restaurant and Saloon also has its devotees, as do scores of other outposts. Spanish Franciscan friars first brought in grapes for communion, and several Albuquerque wineries produce award-winning vintages served at area restaurants.
